Breeder Biography:From my youngest years as a child I have always adored dogs! My dream as a child was to have a small dog that I could call my own. We had family dogs but mostly they were hunting dogs and not one I could say was MINE. I did love them dearly but I wanted a small dog to be mine and just for me. So when I was 12 dad selected the Basenji breed and I got MY very own dog. I named her Daisy and I loved her! I wanted to have a litter of puppies so my parents allowed me to breed her just ONE time. I was overjoyed! I remember staying up all night with my dog and watching her put out pups. Then when school started I was given special permission to come home each day and check on my babies at lunch time. Selling them was also really fun. If I remember correctly think I got to keep the money.
As a young adult I always had a little house pet. Wherever I went my dog went with me. Even to church (don’t laugh). Later on I married and my little Pomeranian went with me. My husband was never thrilled with the long furry coat. Eventually we had our 1st child. As my dog grew older I remember crying when I had to take him to the vet to be put to sleep. I was so sad. My husband could see that I was upset and he asked me if I would you like to start my own breeding dog business? I was thrilled! He heard of an opportunity for me to purchase 10 chihuahuas and their little cottage went with them. I was enthralled. I recall holding and loving each dog every day. Sad to say, I never had a single live puppy. And when one of my girls died, I was totally devastated. Roy assured me we could find an easier breed to handle.
Unbeknownst to me, my vet had contacted a Beagle Breeder about me. She felt sorry for me because I had never had a live puppy. So her breeder friend sold me 3 beagles. One had 10 babies that were 2 weeks old. So I could experience my 1st dog sales as an adult. I loved my 3 beagles. They are the most sweetest dispositions and how can you resist those 2 floppy ears. I still pick up my beagles and give them hugs.
My real heart is with smaller breeds so I investigated on the Italian Greyhounds. We were invited to go and visit a lady that raised them for 20 years. Roy and I fell in love with these small dogs who run like horses. We could have watched them for hours on end so we purchased 10 of them. They are small and OH so easy whelpers and extremely devoted to their owners. Yes, I pick them up too and give them lovings too! I love their personalities! Our Lucy girl is ornery and must be petted 1st. Our quiet Faith will patiently wait her turn to be picked up. Our Lion of Judah is always ready for a hug!
Another of my reasons for dog breeding is to be at home with my son! and family. I take my career as a mom seriously. Zane is generally around when we have customers at the house. He loves to call and pet the puppies. This is the 1st year that we have started homeschooling our son. It is wonderful to home school on a farm. Nature is at your doorstep. When he is older, I plan on offering him an opportunity to buy his own dog and keep the proceeds from the puppy sales. Right now, he is satisfied to just peep in on the puppies when they are 1st born. He likes me to tell him who has puppies in their tummy. And we talk about them “jumping out” when they are born.
Why beagles: I love their loving nature!! So very good with the kiddos. It always amazes me how a beagle puppies will always run to children to be played with. My girls are very trustworthy and I never worry about my son when he is playing with them. And if he gets a little rowdy, beagle puppies are very durable. Definitely can be trusted with the toddler age child. Plus I like their durability. You can count on them being outside to play in the snow. And they do well indoors in our heated doggie house. They work well for the city dweller who wants an indoor.outdoor dog that can play outside during the day.
Why Italian Greyhounds: These are my heart!!! I love how they melt in your arms. They will follow you around and watch you do all your chores. And they KNOW when nail trimming day is here. I think it is instinct Instinct because they all run outside to hide. I love to sneak in on them at midnight and see them all cuddled up together. They play so hard and they cuddle so well at night. For house pets I highly recommend them!!! I always tell customers: beware they are like potato chips. Buy one and you will be back for another one and another. They are quite addictive. The more you have, the more pleasure and fun you can have from watching their crazy stunts. I Just had a customer call today whose Italian Greyhounds insists that she cover him up in his bed each night. If he goes to bed by himself he whines until she spreads the cover over him. We used to have one that would literally dive up into your arms for a good hug and love session. There is nothing like this breed!~ This breed is almost shed free and barks very little. When we got ours, I wondered how long we would have to wait to hear these creatures bark. Of course they bark now our Beagles inform them when any entertaining squirrel is walking by or fox or raccoon.
